Aspects
Square
Modern astrologers often read squares as productive friction: tension that pushes for action, adjustment and growth.
01
Geometry
A square separates two points by 90°, a quarter of the circle.
02
Traditional doctrine
Lilly called the square an aspect of enmity, and Ptolemy classed it as discordant because it joins signs of different kinds.
03
Modern meaning
Modern astrologers often read squares as productive friction: tension that pushes for action, adjustment and growth.
04
Aspect orb
An orb is the allowance of degrees within which an aspect is counted; Lilly gave each planet its own radiation, nine degrees for Jupiter. Solunari applies fixed, versioned orbs in its calculation engine, so the same chart always yields the same aspects.
05
Applying and separating
An aspect is applying while the faster body is still moving toward the exact angle. An aspect is separating once the exact angle has passed and the bodies are moving apart. Astrologers commonly treat applying aspects as building and separating aspects as fading.
