Aspects
Opposition
Modern astrologers read oppositions as polarity: awareness through other people, and the work of balancing two needs.
01
Geometry
An opposition places two points 180° apart, on opposite sides of the zodiac.
02
Traditional doctrine
Lilly called the opposition a difficult aspect, and Ptolemy classed it as discordant.
03
Modern meaning
Modern astrologers read oppositions as polarity: awareness through other people, and the work of balancing two needs.
04
Aspect orb
An orb is the allowance of degrees within which an aspect is counted; Lilly gave each planet its own radiation, nine degrees for Jupiter. Solunari applies fixed, versioned orbs in its calculation engine, so the same chart always yields the same aspects.
05
Applying and separating
An aspect is applying while the faster body is still moving toward the exact angle. An aspect is separating once the exact angle has passed and the bodies are moving apart. Astrologers commonly treat applying aspects as building and separating aspects as fading.
